Understanding the USA Student Transfer (F1) Services

The USA Student Transfer (F1) Services is a non-immigrant student visa that allows foreign students to pursue education in the United States. When circumstances require a transfer to another institution, whether for academic, personal, or other reasons, it’s essential to follow the correct procedures to maintain your F1 status.

Transferring between institutions on an F1 visa involves several steps, including obtaining a new I-20 form from the transfer-in school, notifying your current school of your intent to transfer, and ensuring that all SEVIS records are correctly updated. Any missteps can lead to complications, including a loss of your visa status. That’s why working with experienced professionals like those at Trust Immigration Consultancy can make all the difference.

Why Students Choose to Transfer

There are many reasons why international students might consider transferring to a different school:

  1. Academic Advancement: Some students find that another institution offers programs that better align with their academic goals or provide more advanced opportunities in their field of study.
  2. Personal Reasons: Changes in personal circumstances, such as family needs or living conditions, can make a transfer desirable or necessary.
  3. Financial Considerations: Tuition costs and availability of scholarships or financial aid can vary significantly between institutions, prompting a transfer.
  4. Cultural Fit: Some students may discover that another school offers a more supportive or engaging environment that better suits their cultural, social, or academic needs.

Whatever the reason for the transfer, it’s crucial to approach the process with careful planning and attention to detail.

Important Information for Transfer Students:

Students considering transferring should keep the following points in mind, in addition to the general application guidelines:

To be considered for transfer credit, applicants must submit official undergraduate transcripts from their previous college(s) to the Admissions Office. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide all required documentation on time. Individual courses with a “C” or better grade point average will be considered for transfer credit.

Transfer students who have completed an English Composition and College Math course with a grade of C or higher at an accredited institution may be exempt from the placement test requirement. Please speak with your Admissions representative about this.

Applicants who have completed coursework at other accredited post-secondary institutions in the United States are eligible to apply for transfer credits and/or advanced placement. Before enrolling, they should submit transfer credit requests, including official transcripts from previously attended colleges and supporting documentation.

Transfer credits from colleges and universities in other countries for comparable, verifiable, credit-bearing coursework may be permitted. College/University will award academic credit for nationally recognized advanced placement examinations such as CLEP, DANTE, and/or Excelsior College (Regents) exams on an individual basis. Students may also be given credit for verifiable certifications from nationally recognized organizations such as Microsoft, CICSO, Sun Systems, and others.

*Financial Aid may include loans that must be repaid.
